How to get your site cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity

Getting cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity is not about gaming the model. It is about giving the model an answer it can lift without rewriting. Five steps make the difference.

1. Write answer-first

Every section should open with a one- to two-sentence direct answer, then expand. AI engines extract the lead sentence almost verbatim.

2. Use question headings

Phrase H2s as the actual question a buyer asks: "What is X?", "How does X work?". Engines match the question to your heading, then lift the next paragraph.

3. Add schema

  • FAQPage for Q&A sections.
  • HowTo for step-by-step procedures.
  • Article for blog posts.
  • Organization + WebSite sitewide.

4. Publish an llms.txt

An llms.txt file at the root of your domain tells AI crawlers which pages on your site matter. Keep it short, link to canonical pages, and update it when content changes.

5. Use your brand name explicitly

Write "SiteSonar attaches with one script tag." not "We attach with one script tag." Engines need the entity in the sentence to credit you.
